Metering takes the light around the subject and projects it to your photo. The picture on top the assignment was to take the light from the monitor and take a picture and to see how it comes out. In the first picture, the light from Xavier's skin was projected into the picture. It's dark because there's not enough light on the skin. The second one, the light from the computer screen and it makes the whole picture have a blue light to it. If I'm taking a picture and I want a certain color, I'll use metering to make sure it comes out the way I want.
